TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH COMMUNITY IN INDONESIA
Members of the British Community on line will have access to the Internet, and will probably have noted the following document on the Embassy web site. To ensure that all members of the community who are registered receive a copy we are sending the document by email and fax.
MILLENNIUM BUG: PRACTICAL ADVICE
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has published a Country Statement on Indonesia outlining the information which we have gathered on Indonesia's preparations to meet the threat of the Millennium bug. The Millennium Bug is a world- wide problem which could lead to disruptions in a wide range of essential services, but it is difficult to predict where they might occur or their impact or duration. If you are worried
about the potential for service disruptions, the following is a brief outline of things to consider when making your own preparations. As a general guide it is worth having enough essential supplies for 72 hours without services.
WATER A normal active person needs to drink at least one litre of water each day. Hot environments and intense physical activity can double that amount. Children, nursing mothers, and ill people will need more. Consider storing at least four litres per person per day, for drinking, cooking and washing. Buying bottled water is a good way to make sure that you have enough safe drinking water.
POWER You could make simple preparations to deal with power failures: candles and torches- with spare batteries. Have sufficient cooking gas in reserve.
FOOD Have a reasonable supply of food on hand, in case stores are not open or you can not get there. Pick up extra cans or packages of non-perishable food for your emergency supply each time that you go
shopping. Aim for enough food for three days.
HEALTH Keep your first aid box fully stocked and up to date. If you take medication regularly, ask your doctor to write you an extra prescription ahead of time, in case your pharmacy experiences any problems or delays. SOS International, a privately owned medical facility, say that they have made preparations for Y2K and report that medical care will be available over the millennium period.
BANKING Consider having a reasonable amount of local and hard currency on hand to see you through the New Year, in case credit and debit card and other electronic banking systems are not working. Make sure youhave enough to cover your known (and emergency) requirements. (See Domestic Staff below)
DOMESTIC STAFF Consider also holding enough Rupiahs to pay domestic staff including Lebaran payments and overtime.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS There is likely to be a lot of pressure on this system on 1 January. If everybody tried to telephone immediately after midnight this will congest the system. As a precaution, try not to put yourself in a position where you must depend on telecommunications.
PETROL Fill up before the weekend, and do not plan long journeys without ensuring that you have adequate stocks of fuel with you to get you home.
INSURANCE If you suffer loss or damages due to the Y2K problem, your insurance policy may not offer compensation. Go over your cover with your insurance broker well before the New Year.
PASSPORTS, VISAS, VACCINATIONS Check now that your passport and vaccination certificates are all valid and up to date. If you plan to travel over the New Year period to, or through, a country requiring a
visa, apply for one now. [Do your family members need visas for UK?]
GENERAL If you live in an apartment, check that your landlord or property management company is taking steps to ensure that lifts, security access cards, parking garage gates, air heating and cooling systems, etc. will work after the transition.
If you have a security or fire detection system in your home or business, contact the manufacturer to make sure that it will operate properly during the transition.
Keep yourself informed of the local situation: have a portable battery-operated radio with fresh batteries on hand.
You may need to consider undertaking a full back up of your computers.
CIVIL UNREST In the event of major Y2K problems, civil unrest is possible in Indonesia. Please refer to the Embassy's general checklist of helpful hints and to the advice to the British Community, both elsewhere on this website.
ASSISTANCE The Embassy will be open as usual on Thursday 30 December [315 6264 (6 lines)]. On Friday 31 December normal holiday contact arrangements will be in place, with information available on 392 8622 and a means of contacting the Duty Officer on 0811 831 883. On Saturday 1 January the Embassy will be manned at least for the morning, and thereafter throughout Sunday 2nd and Monday 3rd January if Y2K problems have arisen affecting the British Community (including 24 hour manned cover if necessary). Numbers to ring for advice in that case are: 392 8622, 392 8623, 392 8624.
In a real emergency only, perhaps serious illness or crime, or if your bank cannot provide essential extra funds or encash your Travellers cheques, consular staff may be able to help you.
Consular staff may issue an emergency travel document to a British national in distress; or assist in contacting relations or friends in the United Kingdom by telephone or fax.
